Did you receive a water bill that is higher than usual? Or has there been a drop in water pressure in your home? That may point to a leaking slab under your foundation. But do slab leaks cause foundation problems? Unfortunately, the answer is yes.

Read on to learn how that happens and what you can do to fix the problem.

What Causes Slab Leaks

There are a couple of things that can cause a slab leak. These include:

  • Corroding pipes
  • Faulty installation
  • Damaged pipes during construction
  • Abrasion
  • Hard water

Slab Leaks and Foundation Damage

Slab leaks and foundation problems kind of go hand-in-hand. What causes the other is another case of the chicken or the egg causality dilemma. We are not sure whether slab leaks are the ones causing foundation problems or whether it’s foundation problems that cause slab leaks.

What we know, however, is it all has to do with the shifting of the soil that your house is built on.

Here are two ways that can happen:

  1. If your concrete slab is set on the ground, that slab can move because the ground can move. While a little ground movement is expected, sometimes that may mess with your plumbing system and cause a slab leak.
  2. A slab leak gets the soil beneath your home wet and soft. The soil then erodes, and the resulting voids compromise your home’s structural integrity.

What You Can Do About Slab Leak Foundation Damage

Slab leaks and foundation problems are bad news for your home and should be fixed immediately they are detected. First, your plumber should conduct a sewer water test to determine which between your sewer line and water line has been compromised.

Then follows leak locating to narrow down the leak’s location. After finding the leak, an appropriate cause of action can then be suggested.

That may be:

  • Tunneling under the house to get to the leak
  • Digging right above the leak through your floor
  • Rerouting the leaking line
